Online poker
has steadily been gaining in popularity since the first online poker websites (Planet Poker) opened their doors in 2000. Millions of players worldwide and in the USA now play poker on the Internet. TV shows and magazines have sprung up devoted to covering the subject of poker play and tournament poker.
The World Series of Poker has grown from a field of 512 players in 2000 to over 8000 players in 2006. Other poker tournaments and events saw the same kind of growth. Hundreds of online poker rooms are available to choose from, although only a handful still accept real money play from USA based players. The owners and authors of this site are also online poker players from the USA, so we’ll share our experiences with the various poker rooms here.
USA Poker
After UIGEA passed in 2006, many online poker rooms sites changed their policies, and now they do not offer real money poker to US players. This is a precaution by management (mostly of the publicly owned cardroom sites) even though there hasn’t been any formal ruling against online poker gambling. Management at public companies can’t afford any perceived legal risks.
USA based players still have a lot of choices for where to play poker online. Many top poker websites still allow USA players. We’ll include reviews of all poker sites still accepting USA real money players on this site.
Online Poker Game Strategy
We also have plans for articles about online poker strategy. Internet poker games play differently from traditional land-based poker, and we plan to cover some of the strategic variations you need to make. Most of this strategy advice will be aimed at Texas holdem players, since that’s what we play most of. (That’s also what most other players play most of
too.) You can also find poker tips and strategy from a variety of players at Poker Tomorrow.
